Papaya Leaf Extract And Its Many Benefits

By Maryanne Goff

Papaya leaf extract is made from the popular fruit of the same name. The scientific name of the latter is Carica. It is native to Australia, the Caribbean, and Mexico. It contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants, and is rich in fiber and various minerals and vitamins. The following are some benefits of this extract:

The advantages of using papaya include its anti-inflammatory effect on joints and muscles. For this reason, it is often used by those who have fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other systemic disorders that cause inflammation. In certain cases, it is used in conjunction with traditional medications to enhance the effect of the latter.

Those suffering from digestive disorders such as constipation often find the high fiber content of papaya an excellent remedy for such conditions. Fiber enhances bowel function, and aids digestion. Additionally, it is sometimes taken by those suffering from cancer, as it is believed to bind and remove toxins from the bowel that may cause malignant growth.

Research is currently being conducted to determine whether or not papaya can enhance cardiovascular health. Preliminary studies indicate that it has a positive effect on circulation and stabilizing the human heart beat. However, additional research is necessary to determine whether or not this is the case.

Papaya leaf extract is often used by women who are experiencing nausea in the first trimester of pregnancy. For reasons unknown, the substance appears to have a soothing effect on all types of nausea, particularly morning sickness. Supplements containing the fruit are gaining in popularity among men and women who suffer from motion sickness as well.

Because formulas containing the aforementioned substance are rich in vitamin D, they may prevent some individuals from developing certain cancers. Although this has not yet been proven scientifically, preliminary studies suggest that even those who smoke are at a decreased risk for cancer of the lungs and other malignancies than those who are deficient in vitamin D. For this reason, individuals who are still trying to quit smoking often use such supplements.

The extract can be purchased in health food stores or online. However, it is important to comparison shop and choose a quality supplement in order to experience the most benefits. Many people who use such supplements prefer organic brands instead of those that contain fillers or preservatives. This because certain processing measures used in some manufacturing companies can dilute the potency of the extracted substance, and therefore decrease its effectiveness in certain instances. This is particularly true regarding its anti-inflammatory properties.

The substance is also rich in a vast array of additional nutrients along with the aforementioned vitamin D. These include vitamins C, K, A, B1, B2, and B3. Additionally, it is rich in zinc, phosphorus, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, natural enzymes, and lutein, the latter of which helps to prevent age-related eye disorders such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Due to its many benefits, consumers have everything to gain and nothing to lose by adding this extract to their diet. However, as always, one should speak to his or her family physician prior to taking papaya leaf extract or any new dietary supplement.
